Eagle Pathway Planning – Term 3 and 4.docx

Term 4 Update

It has been another busy term for Eagles.

In maths, we are now working on lots of reasoning and problem solving questions to fill in the gaps we have identified from our recent assessments.

In writing, we are coming towards the end of The Arrival – we have looked at the next section of the story and have planned and written our own flashbacks based on what happens.

In RE, we had a fun lesson learning about the symbolism of the hot cross bun for Easter. We found out that the cross on the top represents Jesus being crucified on the cross, that the spices in the bun represent the spices that were laid with Jesus’ body, that the shape of the bun represents the stone that was placed in front of the tomb and that orange peel can be included to represent the bitterness of Jesus’ death. We then got to enjoy sampling some hot cross buns!

In DT, we are nearly at the end of our challenge to sew a bookmark! This week, we have been applying our skills of cross stitch to create the designs we planned last week. Our bookmarks look brilliant and we can’t wait to bring them home!

Term 4

We are continuing to work hard as we move towards SATs week.

In maths, we have begun work on algebra by understanding expressions and substitution. We enjoyed a lesson on using formulae where we realised we have already used formulae in other maths topics, such as calculating the area of shapes.

In writing, we have had a focus on grammar. We have consolidated our understanding of tenses and have been able to apply this to questions about progressive and perfect tense.

Last week we enjoyed Think Fast Fitness from Mr T and the NSSPEA. The game was great fun and involved pressing different colour lights to test our quick reactions! Our PE topic for this term is based around fitness and we have been learning how to develop our speed and stamina by completing different activities such as running, sprinting, star jumps and high knees.

In our new DT topic, which is a textiles unit, we have designed an end-of-year banner to take to our Moving Up celebrations later in the year. In this week’s lesson, we learnt how to demonstrate a running stitch.

In RE, our new topic in Christianity is Salvation. This week, we watched a video to help us sequence the events of the Easter Story.

Kestrel and Eagle Visit to Easton Jamila Mosque

Today we went to the Easton Jamia Mosque, Bristol. We had a wonderful time and learned a lot about our current topic of Islam.

We looked at a Qur’an and the Imam explained that Muslims believe that the Qur’an contains the words of Allah. He said that the words have been unchanged for 1,400 years and to prevent them from being changed, Muslims learn passages by heart. Originally, the Qur’an was written in Arabic, this is why it is learned that way, but it has also been translated into many other languages. He showed us the Arabic alphabet, and we all tried saying it with him. The Imam explained that Arabic is read from right to left.

Next, he explained the 5 Pillars of Islam:

  1. He explained that Muslims believe in one God called Allah. There are no pictures for him as he is incomparable. Instead, they think of him regarding his attributes like love, forgiveness and power. He told us that Muslims believe in other prophets and the holy books which they were written about in for example Moses and the Torah and Jesus in the Gospels. He explained that the Qur’an was written after this, so Muslims believe that it was the final revelation.
  2. He explained that Muslims are expected to pray 5 times a day, depending on where the sun is in the sky. They prayers are not long, but should be completed. We looked around the Mosque and predicted which way Mecca is. We realised that the carpet looked like many prayer mats and that they must be facing Mecca. He showed us pictures of the ka’ba (cube) in Mecca, Saudi Arabia and explained that they pray to Allah, but the Ka’ba is a focal point for the world.
  3. Zakat is Arabic for ‘charity’. Muslims give 2.5% of their wealth once a year to people who do not have the basic requirements – food, drink, shelter and clothing.
  4. Sawm means to fast. Muslims fast during the Islamic Calendar month of Ramadan to prioritise Allah over their physical needs and wants and to help them to remember people who are poor and hungry. This year, Ramadan starts in mid-February and will last for 30 days, but this shifts slightly every year. Eid is the end of Ramadan, which is a big celebration.
  5. Hajj is the final Pillar and it encourages every Muslim to make a pilgrimage to Mecca once in their lifetime. The Imam went 8 years ago and spoke to us about how incredible it was to be able to worship at the Ka’ba, where 5 million people can worship at once. He said that all Muslims only wear 2 pieces of white cloth so one is not judged on their wealth or power.

This was an amazing learning experience as it brought all of our previous learning to life and taught us so much more.

Term 3

Eagle class have had a fantastic start back to Term Three.

In maths, we have started our topic of FDP (fractions, decimals and percentages) and have been looking at their equivalents and how to convert between them. We have also learnt how to apply this to ordering and comparing them.

In writing, we have begun reading ‘The Arrival’ by Shaun Tan – this is a very exciting book because it does not contain any words! This means we are working hard to use our inference skills to understand the symbolism of what is happening. Have a look at our display below.

In art, we have started a unit of drawing and sketching – we began by carefully studying a roll of paper and discussing where we can see light and shadow and how these tones make a 3D effect.

In PE, we have begun our gymnastics unit, starting with learning how to carefully carry out and demonstrate different rolls.

Term 2 Update

Eagle class have been working hard as the term continues.

In writing, we have moved on to a new unit of instructions and have thought about features such as imperative verbs and adverbials of time and manner and how to use these in our writing. We also had a go at creating some silly instructions such as How to Burn Toast and How Not to Feed A Dragon.

In maths, we are continuing with our fractions topic and have been learning how to multiply fractions by whole numbers as well as multiplying fractions by fractions and also dividing fractions by whole numbers. We have enjoyed watching humorous songs to help us learn the methods.

In French, we are learning how to describe family members, including their hair and eye colour as well as their age and when their birthday is. We have looked at how sentences in French are structured differently to sentences in English.

In DT, we are enjoying a topic of gears and pulleys – in our previous lesson, we investigated how gears work. This week we have thought about the design of teeth and how they can line up to rotate multiple cogs in a sequence.

Term 2

Eagle class have had a great start back to Term 2.

In English, we have begun our next narrative unit by looking at a detailed character description of Cerberus and identifying powerful vocabulary, expanded noun phrases, similes and metaphors.

In maths, we have begun our fractions topic by identifying and simplifying equivalent fractions, as well as how to compare and order them.

In history this week, we learnt about the Ancient Greek games and compared them to modern disciplines today. We enjoyed learning about the social and religious aspects of the games and had chance to plan out a schedule for our own games.

In music, we have begun a theme and variations unit and spent time learning a rhythm and performing it in different ways – clapping, stamping, tapping on knees, tapping on the table, singing and trying it backwards which proved to be the most difficult!

We started and ended the week with a focus on Remembrance – on Monday, we created a variety of poppy art in our community groups (please see the boards on display). On Friday, we had Remembrance service in school, which included the circles of reflection in the playground and then hearing from Nigel who told us all about his time in the RAF.

We also finished the week with our class showcase and really enjoyed sharing our learning with family members – thank you everyone who came along.

Life Skills

October 2025

Eagle class visited the Life Skills Centre in Bristol. They had a very informative morning, learning about risks and dangers in the home and community and most importantly, how to keep safe. They visited and interacted with many different scenarios including how to phone 999 for fire, ambulance and police. They learned about electrical and gas safety, as well as potential dangers in the home and garden. The volunteers who ran the session expressed how impressed they were with our children as they were polite, engaging and knowledgeable.

Term 1 Update

We have got off to an excellent start in Eagle class as term 1 continues.

In reading, we are enjoying ‘Who Let the Gods Out’ and in particular working on our inference skills.

In writing, we have been planning and writing a narrative piece based on a video called The Alchemist’s Letter. This has given us a great opportunity to develop our vocabulary skills and use our imaginations to build on what we have seen in the video.

In art, we are learning about Ancient Greek vases. We have created some positive and negative art pictures and, most recently, we have learnt specific patterns and have begun to apply these to our own designs.

Welcome Back

In Eagle Class, we have enjoyed exploring the etymology of words through our class poem ‘Newt’ that we also performed in a whole school service. Using the vivid descriptions, we delved into our creative side and sculpted our very own newts out of clay that we then painted using acrylic paints.

In maths we have been consolidating our skills in place value and familiarising ourselves with the structure of KS2 SAT arithmetic papers to make sure we know exactly how to answer questions. We have also enjoyed the new addition of Numeracy Ninjas to our maths learning and are excited to see who earns their black belt first.

Last Thursday we got our new topic off to a flying start with a Greek emersion day where we enjoyed learning about the ancient Greek alphabet and how to write our names, we cooked some traditional Greek food and tasted it, made laurel wreaths for our heads and investigated the useful Achimedes Principal in science.

We cannot wait to get stuck into all this year has to offer and are excited to share our journey with you.
