‘To be the best version of ourselves, enjoying life in all its fullness’

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) and British Values

At Kingshill Church School, Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development is integral to our school ethos and curriculum. It underpins our commitment to nurturing respectful, inclusive citizens and plays a key role in promoting fundamental British values within our school and the wider community. SMSC education sits at the heart of our vision, shaping both learning and relationships across the school.

Our SMSC provision is carefully woven through all curriculum areas and enriched further through trips, clubs and wider opportunities. Through this approach, we aim to prepare our children to thrive in modern Britain, equipping them with the understanding, empathy and confidence to contribute positively to a diverse and inclusive society.

The Jigsaw PSHE programme provides a strong, coherent foundation for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. It is a carefully sequenced, progressive curriculum supports children’s emotional literacy, mental health, resilience and personal development. Jigsaw promotes positive relationships, respect for difference and a strong sense of belonging, with themes reinforced through lessons, assemblies and whole-school practice. This consistent approach helps ensure every member of our community feels valued and supported to flourish.

Spiritual Education

At Kingshill Church School, we are fostering a rich spiritual environment for the children to belong, reflect, connect and empathise. We have wonderful grounds, including a forest school, which enables our children to be outdoors and develop their awe and wonder at the power of nature. We develop this further by engaging in open conversations, like Odd One Out, with no ‘right’ answer. We have weekly celebration of successes and achievements (both in and out of school) which are shared with their peers; and acknowledgement and praise for improving and continuing effort which we celebrate through certificates and other rewards.

To enhance pupils’ spiritual development, we maintain strong and purposeful links with our local church. Visiting vicars regularly lead assemblies and collective worship, providing meaningful opportunities for reflection, prayer and exploration of Christian values. These visits enrich pupils’ understanding of faith, encourage thoughtful questioning and help strengthen the sense of community between the school and the church.

Pupil voice on spirituality

‘We talk about what we wonder’

‘I love doing odd one out questions because there is no pressure and it lets us think deeply’

‘I like thinking about things like infinity’

‘I wonder about creation – what made us?’

Our Reflective Areas

Moral Education

Pupils at Kingshill Church School demonstrate a secure understanding of right and wrong. This is consistently reinforced through the school’s positive relationships and behaviour policy, which encourages all children to ‘Be Ready, Respectful and Safe.’

Children are encouraged to express their views on moral and ethical matters, with opportunities provided through pupil voice groups such as the School Council. Through this work, pupils develop confidence in sharing opinions and listening respectfully to others.

Social Education

Our school sits at the centre of a caring and connected community. Pupils are given many opportunities to develop and apply their social skills in a variety of contexts, including through clubs, fairs, discos, trips, community events and inter-school sporting activities.

We are proud of the inclusive way our children mix, collaborate and play together; we are very welcoming of new children and adults. Our  playground and extensive field encourages cooperative play.

Class Showcases

Throughout the year, every class hosts Class Showcases, inviting families and friends into school to celebrate and share their learning. These events provide valuable opportunities for pupils to present their achievements with pride while strengthening the partnership between home and school.

Our Class Showcases play an important role in promoting social cohesion, bringing together families, staff and the wider community in a positive, inclusive environment. They help foster a strong sense of belonging and shared celebration of learning across our school community.

Wider social community

To further strengthen pupils’ social development, we have built strong and meaningful links with our local community, particularly with Argentum Lodge residential care home. Regular visits by all children, provide valuable opportunities for intergenerational connection, helping pupils to develop empathy, communication skills and respect for others. These experiences are mutually beneficial, bringing enjoyment and companionship to residents while enriching our pupils’ understanding of community and belonging.

Community Larder

Our Community Larder is a school-based food bank that supports families within our school community and the wider local area. Open and accessible to all, it reflects our commitment to dignity, care and practical support for those who may need it.

The larder is proudly maintained with the help of a dedicated team of pupils, who assist with organising, stocking and promoting this important provision. Through their involvement, children develop valuable social skills, including teamwork, communication and cooperation, while also strengthening their moral understanding of kindness, fairness and responsibility toward others.

By taking an active role in supporting the Community Larder, pupils learn the importance of service, empathy and community spirit, helping to nurture compassionate, socially aware young people who are ready to contribute positively to society.

Cultural Education

We are committed to providing rich and meaningful cultural education that broadens pupils’ understanding of the diverse world in which they live. Through our curriculum and wider opportunities, children learn about a wide range of cultures, faiths and traditions, helping them to develop respect, curiosity and appreciation for one another.

Pupils are encouraged to learn from each other’s backgrounds and experiences, strengthening our inclusive school community. As part of this work, Key Stage 2 pupils visited a local mosque to deepen their understanding of different faiths and cultures. Educational visits to museums and other places of cultural interest further enrich pupils’ knowledge and cultural awareness.

Our specialist PE teacher enhances cultural and social development through a wide programme of sporting opportunities and fixtures. Pupils are able to engage in a variety of activities such as football and  gymnastics, promoting teamwork, participation and healthy competition.

The arts also play an important role in our cultural offer. Our school choir regularly performs within the local community and has proudly taken part in the Young Voices event at the NEC in Birmingham, joining a 5,000-strong choir. These experiences build confidence, cultural capital and a strong sense of belonging within the wider community.

British Values

At Kingshill Church School, we actively promote British Values. Following Jigsaw PSHE programme plays an important role in this through a structured, progressive curriculum that supports pupils’ personal development and understanding of life in modern Britain.

Through its six themed units, Jigsaw provides regular opportunities for pupils to explore key concepts in age-appropriate ways. Democracy is developed through pupil voice, discussion and collaborative learning. The rule of law is reinforced as children learn about rights, responsibilities and consequences. Individual liberty is supported by helping pupils build confidence, self-awareness and the ability to make safe choices.

Mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs are woven throughout the programme, particularly within the Celebrating Difference unit, where pupils learn to value diversity and challenge stereotypes.
